Where the 10,000 Steps Rule Came From

The number originated with a 1965 Japanese pedometer name, not research. What the studies since have found, and the step count where benefits actually plateau.

In 1965, the Japanese company Yamasa launched a pedometer called the manpo-kei. The name translates as "10,000-step meter". It was chosen partly because the Japanese character for 10,000 — 万 — resembles a walking figure.

That is the origin of the target. Not a trial, not a guideline: a product name, chosen in part because the character looked like a person walking.

The number then spread worldwide, was adopted by fitness trackers, and became the default goal for hundreds of millions of people. Researchers only got round to testing it decades later — and what they found is more encouraging than the round number suggests.

What the research actually shows

The most-cited study is I-Min Lee's 2019 work in JAMA Internal Medicine, following around 17,000 older women.

Compared with about 2,700 steps a day, mortality fell 41% at around 4,400 steps. It kept falling to roughly 7,500 steps, and then flattened. Beyond that point, more steps did not reduce mortality further in this group.

A 2021 JAMA Network Open study of middle-aged adults found the same shape: risk dropped sharply up to about 7,000–8,000 steps, then plateaued.

A 2022 meta-analysis in The Lancet Public Health, pooling 15 studies and roughly 47,000 people, found the plateau varies by age. For adults over 60 it arrives around 6,000–8,000 steps. For those under 60, around 8,000–10,000.

Two conclusions follow, and they point in different directions from the usual advice.

The first steps matter most. Going from 3,000 to 6,000 buys far more health than going from 7,000 to 10,000. If you are sedentary, the largest available gain is at the start — which is the opposite of how goals usually feel.

The plateau is real. There is little evidence of harm from walking more, but the mortality benefit levels off well below 10,000 for most people. The round number is not wrong so much as arbitrary.

Intensity, and whether it matters

Several studies looked at whether walking pace changes the result independently of volume.

The consistent finding: total steps matter more than cadence. In the Lancet meta-analysis, faster walking showed some additional benefit, but step count was the dominant variable. In the 2019 study, stepping intensity showed no significant association once total steps were accounted for.

This is good news for anyone who walks slowly, walks with a stick, or breaks walking into short trips. The steps count.

Why your tracker's numbers disagree

Two devices on the same person routinely differ by 10–20%, for reasons that are entirely mundane.

Placement. Wrist trackers see arm movement, not foot strikes. Pushing a trolley, holding a handrail or carrying a bag under-counts substantially. Phones in a pocket miss steps taken while the phone sits on a desk.

Algorithms. Every manufacturer sets its own threshold for what counts as a step. There is no standard.

False positives. Wrist devices add steps during driving on rough roads, clapping, chopping vegetables and brushing teeth.

Validation studies generally find modern devices within about 10% for normal walking, and worse at slow speeds and for people using mobility aids.

The practical response is not to hunt for a more accurate device but to compare each device only against itself. Your tracker's 8,000 today and 6,000 last Tuesday is a meaningful comparison. Your 8,000 versus someone else's 8,000 on a different device is not.

Distance and calories

A rough conversion, useful for context:

Stride length is roughly 0.4 × height for walking, so a taller person covers more ground per step. The step counter uses your height rather than an average, which changes the distance figure by 15% or more at the extremes of the range.

On calories, expect roughly 30–50 kcal per 1,000 steps for most adults — so 10,000 steps is in the region of 300–500 kcal. This is worth knowing mainly because it is smaller than people assume, and it is why walking alone is an unreliable weight-loss strategy while being an excellent health one.

What to take from this

If you currently walk very little, the evidence says the first few thousand additional steps are the most valuable thing available to you, and you do not need to reach any particular number to benefit.

If you already walk 7,000–8,000, you are in the range where the curve flattens. Walking more is fine and probably mildly beneficial; treating 10,000 as a threshold you have failed to meet is not supported by anything.

And if you want a target with actual research behind it, 7,000 has considerably more evidence than 10,000 — which remains, at heart, the name of a 1965 pedometer.
